What does the company need to provide?

  • Experienced deckhands willing to be trainers
  • An idle tug with gear
  • A simulated barge bow (bulkhead, scaffold or flat roof)
  • Bollards and cleats for knot work

 What will they learn?

 

  • By reading the Towboat Deckhand Handbook they will learn safety, expectations, nautical knowledge and work ethic
  • By discussing the course Spotlight handouts, they will understand the theory of the most important safety protocols, expectations, techniques and procedures of working on a tug
  • Upon completing a guided familiarization and orientation on an idle boat they will be safer and more prepared for on the job training aboard an active tug
  • They will demonstrate competency of using knots and ties, boarding techniques, tools, gear and equipment
  • New recruits will demonstrate their competency level through a written practical knowledge test

Towboat Deckhand Training Courses

Standard Barge Towing or Standard with Log Towing

The Towboat Deckhand Training Course is a dockside orientation and familiarization for new recruits to your company. The courses available are  Standard Barge Towing and Standard with Log Towing.

The benefit of these courses is that the company can assess a new recruits’ competency level before getting on an active tug with a full crew. The company will be able to provide dockside training and familiarization before sailing, utilizing their best deckhands as trainers with this cost effective in-house course.  

Upon completing the familiarization, orientation and assessment, the new hires will be safer and more prepared for the next stage, on the job training aboard a working tug.
